Max Brenner, Grill'd, Hanaichi - QV Square

Rising from the ashes of Wagamama QV comes Hanaichi, a Japanese-style fast food outlet in the prime location of QV Square, hangout for Asian students and office workers. My first impression was of shock when I saw disposable paper and plastic bowls for the 2 serving sizes, regular and large, respectively. All I could think of was food court food in shop. It was self-service too. Being hungry, I pressed ahead and placed my order for a simple bowl of ramen. How wrong could that be? Well... it wasn't very right either. It looked the part with 2 very lean slices of pork and a leaf of seaweed, but the soup was mostly salty and not much flavour otherwise. I couldn't tell if it was pork or chicken soup. At least the service was prompt and friendly. Here's the blurb from QV.com.au: With melt in your mouth dishes like Tempura Udon, Beef Yakiniku, Miso Katsu-Don and Chicken Teriyaki-Don, Hanaichi is sure to please! Looks like a Queensland-based chain! www.hanaichi.com.au/

Bento #82: Weird Stuff

Added 9:15 / 29.4.2009

...this bento has no unifying theme other than "stuff I found in my kitchen this morning." I didn't have time to make rice, so I made ramen for my top tier because it only takes three minutes. Everything in the bottom tier came out of the fridge. There's no fruit, there's not much in terms of veggies, and it's weird. The protein - what there is of it - comes from the kidney beans, the yogurt, and the miso. The only praise I have for this bento is that it was fast... and at least the box is full!

Beef Shabu Shabu - Momotaro AUD7

The authentic Japanese food is always yummy at Momotaro! Probably one of the best tonkotsu ramen in town with their milky pork-bone soup and chewy yet smooth noodles! I keep forgetting to get the vegetables on a separate plate though, they interfere with my slurping of the noodles :) The Curry Katsu with rice was a bit strange. The curry was packed with lentils and actually quite nice with rice, but it didn't seem to go well with the crisp breaded pork cutlet. Phil wanted to try the Teriyaki Chicken. That was good too, with a rich, sweet sauce that wasn't too sweet, but it lacked the smokiness of the teriyaki chicken at Don Don. I really have to learn how to fix the white-balance problems with my Nikon D60 though. I think in No Flash mode, the White Balance is set to default :( Momotaro Rahmen 392 Bridge Rd Richmond 3121 (03) 9421 1661
